Mandisa, Grammy-winning singer and “American Idol” alum, dead at 47

Mandisa, a Grammy-winning singer who got her start on “American Idol,” died Thursday at age 47, her representative confirmed to CBS News.

“At this time we do not know the cause of death or any other details,” her spokesperson told CBS News, adding that the singer was found dead in her home.

“We ask for your prayers for his family and close-knit circle of friends during this incredibly difficult time,” the spokesperson said.

Statements posted on her social media pages read: “Mandisa was a voice of encouragement and truth to people facing life’s challenges everywhere,” and her own words said it best.

“I am already at home

You have to put it down

because Jesus holds me now—

And I’m not alone”

Mandisa, who placed 9th in the fifth season of the popular singing competition, later pursued a career in Christian music and wrote extensively about her faith in her memoir and music. She became one of the few American Idol alumnae to win Grammys. Other notable winners include Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson.

She won the award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album in 2014 for her album “Overcomer. Mandisa has received 5 nominations, including best contemporary pop/gospel album in 2007 and 2009.
