Erik ten Hag’s side led at Stamford Bridge in the 98th minute, but somehow gave the Blues the points, conceding two goals in a matter of seconds.

Jurgen Klopp will be happy to have seen United lose before their clash, but he will be wary of that result being used as motivation against his team.

The Reds are currently top of the Premier League and flying, with another victory bringing them closer to getting their hands on the title.

Manchester United vs Liverpool: the turmoil of Ten Hag

United’s dramatic defeat took the pressure off Ten Hag.

His team is now out of the Champions League race and is even on the verge of missing out on European qualification altogether.

Many fans are calling for his head but a victory against Liverpool would be the best way to get them back on his side.

And Ten Hag’s record at Old Trafford shows he could do just that, as does his 71.7 per cent win rate at home, winning 38 of his 53 games in charge.

This is the best win ratio of any permanent United manager in the club’s history, just above Sir Alex Ferguson (71.2%).

Manchester United vs Liverpool: team news

United have an injury crisis at centre-back after replacing Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans against Chelsea.

Varane came off at half-time before his replacement Evans was sent off just 20 minutes into the second half.

That leaves United with just Harry Maguire and Willy Kambwala in that position, with Lisandro Martinez ruled out again.

Victor Lindelof is also sidelined alongside Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial.

As for Liverpool, Diogo Jota and Trent Alexander-Arnold are both closing in on a return.

They are expected to train as a full squad before the match while Alisson is expected to be out for a little longer.

Thiago, Stefan Bajcetic, Den Doak and Joel Matip all remain absent but Curtis Jones made his return against Sheffield United and will feature.

Manchester United vs Liverpool: what was said?

Speaking after the late defeat to Chelsea, Ten Hag described his side’s results last week as “unacceptable”.

“You have to do your job,” he said. “The players know their job and they didn’t make the right decisions.

“We didn’t react quickly enough. We need to make better decisions. We need to know when to keep the ball, pass, move and change play when we win.

“We made individual errors which cost us the match. We must learn from this. When you are a Man United player, you should already know how to deal with this situation.

“In five days, we lost five points. This is unacceptable. We gave away a match that we should have won.
