Manchester United vs Chelsea Predictions

Manchester United are close to achieving their main target for the season.

One more point will secure a place in the top four for Erik ten Hag’s side, who are currently three ahead of Liverpool with one game less.

United will be keen to get the job done on Thursday, but this weekend’s clash with Fulham serves as something of an insurance.

A 1-0 win over Bournemouth last time out – along with Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa – left the Red Devils close to sealing a Champions League return.

It’s well known that United haven’t won the Premier League title since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. But they haven’t troubled Europe’s top flight either.

United have been in and out of the Champions League throughout the post-Ferguson era. They have only reached the last eight of this competition twice in the last 12 years.

It’s an extremely disappointing record for a club that have been crowned continental champions three times.

Tottenham Hotspur, who don’t have as rich a history as the Red Devils, have reached the quarter-finals as often as United since 2010.

Considering Inter are in the Champions League final this season, there’s no reason Ten Hag’s side can’t make their mark in next season’s edition of the tournament.

Before that, they must secure qualification by avoiding defeat in at least one of their last two home games.

Manchester United vs Chelsea Predictions

Manchester United can secure a top-four spot in style by beating Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Manchester United win to nil – 2/1 (Spreadex)

Chelsea must be wishing this grim campaign was over already.

Hardly anything has gone well for the Blues in 2022/23 and there are no major positives to take away from the summer.

Todd Boehly, the co-owner and president, has to take a lot of the blame. His transfer policy has been haphazard at best. Chelsea spent almost £600million on new players but only got worse.

Still, it’s still surprising that a team containing so much talent is currently in 12th place. Chelsea will be West London’s lowest-ranked Premier League side this season, behind Brentford and Fulham – two clubs with far fewer financial resources.

Many problems at Stamford Bridge predate Frank Lampard’s appointment as caretaker manager. But statistics show that Chelsea have regressed on their watch.

Since Lampard’s return in early April, only two top-flight teams have worse records than the Blues.

Chelsea have lost seven of their nine games under Lampard in all competitions which is why it’s hard to see them creating an upset here.

Moreover, they have the fourth-worst attacking record in 2022/23 and face a side that have conceded eight league goals at home this season.

Under 2.5 goals – 5/4 (Spreadex)

Manchester United’s home record this season is excellent. Only Manchester City average more points per game in front of their own fans. United at Old Trafford outclassed Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium and Liverpool at Anfield.

Moreover, they haven’t lost at home since their 2-1 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion on the opening weekend.

Their success on familiar ground was built on a rock-solid bottom line. As mentioned above, United have only conceded eight goals at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag has struggled with a number of defensive injuries this year, with Lisandro Martinez still sidelined and Raphael Varane also spending a few weeks on the treatment table.

But United remained a difficult match at Old Trafford, where the fans are now fully behind the team.

Given that a point will do for United, we’ll likely see a controlled and measured performance on Thursday. There is no need for the home team to go in search of a decisive victory.

Chelsea’s struggles to put the ball in the back of the net mean it’s likely to be a low-scoring encounter. A single goal will probably be enough for United to record their 22nd win of the season.

Marcus Rashford will score anytime – 11/10 (Spreadex)

Marcus Rashford has been one of Manchester United’s best players this season.

The England international has struggled with injury and illness for the past two weeks but is expected to be reinstated in the starting XI for Chelsea’s visit on Thursday.

United missed Rashford against Bournemouth. Casemiro put them ahead from the start, but the visitors to Vitality Stadium otherwise lacked a ruthless advantage in front of goal.

United have relied heavily on their academy product in the final third this season. He has scored 16 times in the Premier League. United’s next top scorer is Bruno Fernandes with six goals.

Rashford was in sensational form after the World Cup break until the end of February, but goalscoring has dried up a bit in recent months.

Nonetheless, we imagine his chances of finding the back of the net in United’s penultimate game of the campaign.
