However, Amorim did not say that he regrets the general observation that his team is in great difficulty.
While three successive victories have put United in a good position to secure a top eight place and direct entry into the Europa League knockout stages, they are out of the League Cup and are 13th in the Premier League.
Amorim believes that it would not be helpful to try to hide the fact that there are important problems that need to be resolved.
“I don’t take responsibility for the players,” he said. “I say, and I’m very blunt about these things, that at the moment we are performing really poorly and our results are really bad.
“I’m stating the obvious. If you want, I can delude myself and say different things. But I’m telling it as I saw it.
“I think it’s a good thing to be really honest. You saw one thing, I saw one thing. If you’re in the stadium, you can understand it. So let’s be realistic and work on it.”
However, Amorim and defender Harry Maguire have different explanations for why United have been so poor – particularly at Old Trafford, where they have lost four of their last five league matches.
United’s six defeats in their first 12 home league matches are their worst performance since 1893-94.
Amorim focused on the anxiety that carries over to his team when playing at home.
“It’s clear,” he said. “We are more nervous at home than away and it is getting more and more difficult.”
However, England defender Maguire pointed out that United have gone behind in their last five league matches, including three of them conceding within five minutes.
“If I could explain it, we would change it immediately,” Maguire said. “We have players who have won many trophies at club, but we don’t play well enough as a team.
“We gave Brighton a goal. We talked about it before the game. The first goal against Nottingham Forest was a set play – and against Bournemouth.
“These are not things that pose a tactical problem. You have to be mentally ready to win a match. At the moment we don’t have small margins because we are not mentally focused.”
Centre-back Victor Lindelof returned to training after missing the previous seven matches, while striker Marcus Rashford also took part in the main session despite not having played since being ruled out for the Manchester derby on last month.
Antony and Alejandro Garnacho are also expected to be involved although they are linked with moves away from the club.
