Manchester United end the season with their worst ever Premier League result despite beating Brighton

Manchester United finished eighth to seal an unwanted record of their lowest ever Premier League finish.

Erik ten Hag’s team were still in contention for European qualification despite fluctuating results throughout the season.

However, recent defeats against Crystal Palace and Arsenal have left them with an unlikely task on the final day of the Premier League.

Man United needed Chelsea and Newcastle to lose and overcome a 24-goal difference to at least finish seventh.

But despite a 2-0 victory over Brighton thanks to goals from Diogo Dalot and Rasmus Hojlund, they finished eighth, marking their worst final finish since the competition’s inception in 1992.

The record was previously held in the 2013/14 season, the first following the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson from the club, where they finished seventh.

Chelsea beat Bournemouth 2-1 and Newcastle won 4-2 against Brentford, with Man United still well off the top of English football with their latest result.

They can still qualify for Europe next season, as a win in the FA Cup final against Manchester City would give them a place in the Europa League.

But their Premier League finish is putting a damper on their campaign and it’s a marked decline from their third-place finish last season.

Man United finished the season with just 18 of their 38 league matches, 14 defeats, six draws and a goal difference of -2.

They were also eliminated from the Champions League in the group stage and the Carabao Cup in the fourth round.

Ten Hag’s future as a manager has been uncertain in recent months and Sunday’s result only adds to the pressure on the Dutchman.

Victory in the FA Cup final next weekend is now a must if they are to play on the continent next season.

Graham Potter, Gareth Southgate and Thomas Tuchel are among potential candidates to replace Ten Hag in the event of a change.
