More from Fernandes, speaking to Sky Sports: “Obviously the work is not done yet. We still have one game left in the Premier League and then the biggest game of the season, the FA Cup final.

“It’s been a difficult season. The table shows it and we are all aware of it. The fans have been incredible and behind us all season. We all appreciate what they have done for us.

“We want to do better and do different and they (the fans) deserve it.

“They were amazing for us and we had to do something, we tried but the results didn’t show it. We worked hard and everyone did their best, it’s not enough and we need to do more.

“We still have two games to play and we need to finish in the best possible way.

“There is no such thing as a captain’s performance, it’s a team performance.

“I am only different from others because I have the armband. I always do my best and we always do our best for the club. Nobody hides that we play for a big club and we have to raise our standards every game.”

Fernandes on his future

Before being taken away by Ten Hag, he said: “I will be here until the club wants me and the club wants me to be part of the future. If for some reason they don’t want me, I’ll go.
