Manchester City vs. Aston Villa predictions

Manchester City are no longer the favorites to win the Premier League title.

A 0-0 draw against Arsenal at the weekend, coupled with Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, propelled City to second in the betting table, behind the Reds.

Many will disagree with this assessment. City have the easiest matchup of the three contenders, although games like Wednesday’s against Aston Villa won’t be easy.

They also have more experience and know-how within their squad than Liverpool or Arsenal. The former have won a Premier League title since 1990, while the latter have not finished top of the table since 2004.

Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal manager, has only won one league championship as a player – and that was with Rangers in the very different environment of the Scottish Premier League.

At the same time, City no longer look like the force they were last season, when Pep Guardiola’s side swept all before them in three competitions.

They were the most disappointed team after Sunday’s 0-0 draw against Arsenal. As the home team, City were forced to move forward, not least because they lost the second leg at the Emirates Stadium.

Yet Guardiola’s men struggled to break down Arsenal’s well-organized rearguard. This result means they are yet to beat another member of the Premier League’s top five this season.

Eradicating City would be a huge mistake. There is still a strong chance they will set a new record by becoming the first team in English football history to win a fourth consecutive league title this season.

However, City are not firing on all cylinders at the moment and their two title rivals, Liverpool and Arsenal, can sense it. Guardiola has work to do if his team is to climb back to the top of the table.

Manchester City vs Aston Villa predictions

Manchester City will look to get back on track here, but Aston Villa won’t be looking back at the Etihad Stadium.

Draw/Manchester City half-time/full-time – 10/3 (pari365)

Manchester City can still reach 91 points this season, which would be their fourth best total under Guardiola. That would surely be enough to win the title too.

Indeed, City know that nine wins from their remaining nine matches would likely put them beyond the reach of Liverpool and Arsenal, who both have a trickier run of matches on the horizon.

This time last year, City had hit their stride. On the way to the treble, they beat Arsenal, Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid by three or more clear goals between March and May. The current team still wins many matches, but not in the same style.

That said, we expect City to find a way past Aston Villa. They may have to dig deep, though, and it wouldn’t be at all surprising if Unai Emery’s side went into the break tied.

Villa are a clumsy opponent and can make life difficult for City at times on Wednesday. But at the end of the day, we hope the champions come out of this.

⚽ Aim for a draw and a win for Manchester City in the half-time/full-time market ⚽

Both teams score – 3/4 (bet365)

Provided five teams qualify for next season’s Champions League, as is likely, Aston Villa are in a strong position.

They hold an 11-point lead over sixth-placed Manchester United ahead of the midweek round of matches. Erik ten Hag’s side have a game in hand, but Villa have a vastly superior goal difference.

Booking a place in Europe’s premier competition would be a magnificent achievement in Emery’s first full season at the helm. Villa have not graced the tournament since 1983 when they won it.

Villa’s home form has been great in the first half of the season, but they have actually been better on the road of late.

Villa have taken 11 points from the last 15 points available on opposing sides, compared to nine at home over the same period. They have also scored in eight of their last nine away games.

⚽ Give both teams a score of 3/4 with bet365 ⚽

Ollie Watkins will score anytime – 3/1 (bet365)

Erling Haaland is in trouble at the moment. He was kept quiet by the Arsenal defense on Sunday and now has five games without a goal for club and country.

The Norway international is destined to come out on top – and when he does, it might be for revenge.

Haaland is the favorite in the anytime scoring market, but Ollie Watkins appears to be the better choice from a betting perspective.

Haaland is the only Premier League player to have put the ball in the back of the net more often than Watkins in 2023/24.

The Villa striker is having a fantastic season and he can make an impact in Wednesday’s game.

⚽ Back Ollie Watkins to score anytime at 3/1 with bet365 ⚽
