Manchester United have suffered another blow after Mason Mount withdrew from Sunday’s clash with Arsenal and Luke Shaw suffered a setback in his recovery.

Mount made just seven appearances after four months out with a calf injury, but was injured in training on Thursday. Shaw has not played since February, although Ten Hag remains confident the England defender will play again in the remaining four games of the season.

“Luke has had a setback in his process but there is still hope,” the United boss said. “Yesterday Mason Mount left training, so he will not be available on Sunday. It’s very unfortunate, very unlucky. It’s a symbol (of the season).’

Asked if he regretted not trying to sign Declan Rice over Mount, who has had an injury-plagued season since signing from Chelsea for £60million in the summer, Ten Hag said : “He (Rice) is a very good player and he would have done it.” installed here. But I’m not unhappy with Mason. I’m very happy with him, he’s a very robust player. In the last four seasons, he only had one minor problem at the end of his Chelsea career. He always played. It’s really bad luck and we’ve really missed him throughout the season.

There was better news for Ten Hag after Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay returned to training ahead of the Arsenal game. The United boss confirmed Lisandro Martinez also wanted to play after recovering from a calf injury but was held back.

Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Luke Shaw has suffered a setback in his recovery from injury.

“Yesterday Licha came to see me and wants to play on Sunday against Arsenal but he is not ready,” added Ten Hag. “He’s desperate to play, he misses it so much and the team misses him. He wants to play but he’s had three injuries during the season. Now he’s almost there, injury-free, but now he has to get back team training.

“I will never play with a player, ever. It’s about them, their future, and what matters most is their career. The club is the most important but the safety and health of the player is of a high level.

“The players fight to be available, they all try. This morning Bruno was on the field and Scott McTominay was back on the field. Rashford also trained this morning. We have to see how he recovers. I hope he will train tomorrow and then be ready for Sunday.

Ten Hag insisted he will build a team to beat Arsenal and will not be influenced by the FA Cup final against Manchester City on May 25.

“We play every game to win, not to prepare for the next one,” he added. “Of course it comes to mind, but the team is eager to win and we choose the best team for Sunday to win this game. I am not taking big risks with the players now to win on Sunday with the risk that they give up again, but it’s not that different from a normal situation if you didn’t have the Cup final.
