Manchester United fans who left Wembley in shock and disgust when Victor Torp scored Coventry City’s goal were filmed making a hasty U-turn when the match was disallowed for offside.

The Sky Blues thought they had long since completed a turnaround after going 3-0 down when Torp scored in the final minutes of extra time in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final.

This prompted many enraged United fans to hastily leave Wembley Way.

But when VAR discovered that Haji Wright, who had set up Torp, had strayed offside by the narrowest of margins, many of them turned around to try to return to the stadium and watch on penalties which United ultimately won.

It’s unlikely they could have come back, but everyone who did saw Erik ten Hag’s men pull off a lucky escape to win 4-2 on penalties to set up a final date against Man City on May 25.

In an afternoon of rollercoaster emotions, United took a three-goal lead against their Championship opponents through Scott McTominay, Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes.

But Erik ten Hag’s side inexcusably let that lead slip away as goals from Ellis Simms, Callum O’Hare and Haji Wright forced extra time.

With penalties looming, Torp beat Andre Onana and sparked wild celebrations in Coventry’s half of Wembley.

However, they were interrupted when VAR officials discovered that Wright had just passed Aaron Wan-Bissaka in an offside position before crossing for Torp to score.

In the shootout, Coventry captain Ben Sheaf sent the decisive spot-kick over the bar to allow United striker Rasmus Hojlund to win.

“If he had cut his nails we wouldn’t be talking about sanctions,” Coventry boss Mark Robins later said of Wright.

“We will talk about our performance for a long time. We are disappointed but we can’t be too depressed. During the last hour of the match we played like Manchester United and that’s what I’m proud of.
