Manchester United fans have called for Mauricio Pochettino to succeed Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

The explosive news broke on Tuesday evening that the Argentine coach would part ways with the club after just one season in charge.

Chelsea have endured a turbulent start to the 2023-24 campaign and, amid a long injury list, fell down the table, before experiencing a late resurgence to finish sixth in the table.

Pressure had mounted on Pochettino as many questioned why his team, who had spent £1bn on new signings over the past year, were not living up to the standards perhaps expect from her. However, the Argentine would appear to be a game-changer at the end of the season, with Chelsea winning their last five league matches.

After noting the 52-year-old’s recent success with his young team, Man United fans took to social media on Tuesday evening to call on Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his management group to appoint the Argentine football manager , now unemployed.

Speculation had arisen in 2022 that the Red Devils had selected Pochettino as a potential target to succeed interim manager Michael Carrick, following the departure of interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

Yet Pochettino reportedly turned down the chance to join Man United, in the hope he would be named Carlo Ancelotti’s successor at Real Madrid.

He would then land at Chelsea, replacing Graham Potter as the Blues’ permanent manager, after Frank Lampard took over as interim manager for 11 games.

But after one season in charge, he will part ways with the Blues, after the 52-year-old was subjected to an internal review – led by sporting directors Paul Winstanley, Laurence Stewart and co-controlling owner Behadad Eghbali – following their 2-1 victory against Bournemouth.

Sporting directors Winstanley and Stewart said in a statement published on the club’s website: “On behalf of everyone at Chelsea, we would like to express our gratitude to Mauricio for his service this season. He will be welcome at Stamford Bridge at any time and we wish him the best in his future coaching career.

Pochettino added: “Thank you to the Chelsea ownership group and sporting directors for the opportunity to be part of the history of this football club. The Club is now well placed to continue to progress in the Premier League and Europe in the years to come.

It comes amid Erik ten Hag’s uncertain future at Man United after a dismal season at the club, with the Red Devils at risk of failing to qualify for European football next season after their lowest finish in the top flight since the 1989-90 season.

Although Ratcliffe will not fire the United boss before the FA Cup final against Man City this weekend, there are fears his management group could choose to go in a different direction next season, Thomas Tuchel, Gareth Southgate and Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna being linked. with the managerial job at Old Trafford.
