Man struck, killed crossing busy north Oceanside street

A man was struck and killed while trying to cross a busy Oceanside thoroughfare Monday evening, the second fatal crash in which a pedestrian was killed in the North County city in two days.

The crash happened around 9 p.m. when the man was trying to cross Mission Avenue just west of Ocean Pointe Road, Oceanside Police Sgt. » said Clint Bussey.

The man was about 100 yards from the crosswalk when he was struck by a gold Nissan Murano heading east on Mission. A second vehicle ran over the man in the road, Bussey said.

The man, aged around 45, died at the scene. His name has been withheld pending notification of his family.

Both drivers stopped and cooperated with police. Bussey said speed was not a factor in the crash and the driver who first hit the man was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The fatal collision occurred a day after three people in their 20s were struck by a car Sunday evening while crossing Oceanside Boulevard, west of College Boulevard, about 100 yards from the crosswalk. A 21-year-old man died. His companions were injured but treated in a hospital and released during the night.

The department’s major accident investigation team is investigating. Anyone with information about the crash was asked to call Officer Ibrahim Serdah at (760) 435-4769.
