Man shot in face with BB while jogging in downtown Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A Wichita man is recovering after being shot in the face with a BB while jogging Thursday evening.

Cory Newen had just put his 1-month-old baby to bed, leaving his apartment for exercise and heading toward the Arkansas River when he was shot with a BB just after 11:30 p.m. He said it all happened so quickly.

“This is how I’m going to die,” Newen said.

He said he was jogging between Water and Main Street when the red sedan approached; he didn’t hear anything beyond his music until the shots rang out.

“About two minutes later I heard through my music ‘pop pop pop’ and I felt this pain in my chin,” Newen said.

» He said, the adrenaline pumping, not knowing if he had been hit by bullets, those from a pistol or those from an airsoft rifle.

“There was blood everywhere, blood on my hands, blood running down my neck, all over my chin,” Newen said.

He said the car turned around, making him believe they were going to shoot him a second time. Fortunately, they continued driving and it was a BB bullet and not a gun bullet.

“First it was a surprise, then it was like I can’t describe it as fear, but a booking like this is how I’m going to go out,” Newen said.

Newen served in the Marines for six years. He never thought he would have to keep himself safe, just a few blocks from home.

“I’ve been jogging at night, I’ve been jogging in the morning, my wife and I go for a lot of walks, this is the first incident. It really happened,” Newen said.

He said he hoped to forget this situation, adding that he would be more vigilant in the future.

“Every time I go out, I have this lingering emotion, like, ‘What if this happens again?’ I’m not going to let something like that bring me down,” Newen said.

The Wichita Police Department said it is actively investigating the passing of a BB gun.

Newen said he was glad his wife and newborn were not there when it happened.
