Emergency crews evacuated a person on a stretcher after a fire was put out outside the courthouse where jury selection for former President Donald Trump’s election was taking place. the trial takes place. Witnesses say they saw a man pour liquid on his head and set himself on fire.
The New York City Fire Department said it responded to reports of an individual on fire and transported a patient in critical condition to New York Presbyterian-Cornell.
Several people, including a guest interviewed by CNN, witnessed the incident at Collect Pond Park.
One witness described pamphlets the person had thrown around, apparently making allegations about New York University.
“I heard this noise, and it was these papers that he had thrown in the air,” the witness said.
“It caught our attention and – caught my attention, anyway…and then he took out a can and he poured it over himself. And at that point I thought, ‘Oh …it’s going to be horrible.'”
“It happened so fast, what are you doing,” another witness said.
It was unclear whether the action was related to the former president’s trial, where jury selection is being finalized.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
