Man killed, three children injured in crash in South San Jose

SAN JOSE – A 38-year-old East Palo Alto man was killed and three young children were injured in a crash Wednesday evening on State Route 85 in south San Jose, according to authorities.

The single-vehicle collision occurred around 7:10 p.m. south of Cottle Road. The man was driving a 2002 Toyota Sequoia more than 65 mph in the northbound expressway when he veered into the center reservation, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release.

The Toyota then collided with a metal guardrail and came to rest in the highway, according to the CHP.

The CHP said the man died at the scene from injuries he suffered in the crash. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner and Coroner’s Office will release her identity once it is confirmed and next of kin have been notified.

The children – ages 2, 4 and 8 – were transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with minor injuries, according to the CHP.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. The CHP said it was not immediately clear whether drugs or alcohol played a role.
