Man killed in daytime shooting near Dorchester College

A man was fatally shot near a college in Dorchester late Monday afternoon in broad daylight, Boston police said in a news release.

Police have not reported whether they have identified a suspect and are asking the public to help gather information about the shooting.

Police found the victim with gunshot wounds at 264 Columbia Rd. after being called to the scene shortly before 5 p.m. to a report that shots had been fired. Police said the man, whom they did not identify, was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police found the victim near Lilla Frederick Pilot Middle School, located at 270 Columbia Rd.

Police were called to the scene by the city’s ShotSpotter gunshot detection system which alerts police to locations where gunshots were recorded, the Boston Globe reported. They found the man inside a vehicle near 243 Columbia Rd., which is across from Frederick School.

The school day was over when the shooting happened, but some after-school programs were still going on, WHDH reported. The school has been temporarily put into “safe mode”.

“It’s a daylight shot. It happened in the middle of the day – a lot of people are here in general, so we’re asking the public to help us with that,” the Boston Police Commissioner said. , Michael Cox, to reporters.

This is the fourth time someone has been shot dead near a school in Dorchester in the past year and a half.

In December 2022, two people were shot near Joseph Lee K-8 School. In October 2022, a high school student Jeremiah Burke was shot dead outside the school. In March 2022, a TechBoston Academy teacher and student were shot outside the school.
