Man in custody after Christmas tree fire outside Fox News building, police say

A 49-year-old man has been taken into police custody after a large Christmas tree outside the Fox News building in Manhattan appears to have been set on fire overnight, police said.

In a statement on Wednesday, the New York Police Department said Fox News security members spotted a man climbing the Christmas tree outside the News Corp building. in midtown Manhattan around 12:15 am.

The decorated tree was then engulfed in flames, with video posted on social networks showing its burning branches.

Upon arrival, NYPD officers saw a man flee from the scene and apprehended him. The police did not name him.

The blaze was quickly put out by firefighters who responded to the incident and no injuries were reported, according to an NYPD statement.

NYPD spokesman Detective Adam Navarro told NBC News that at around 5 a.m. Wednesday morning, charges were still pending.

Pictures shared on social networks After the fire was extinguished, the damage was revealed, with the top half of the tree and its decorations burnt down, with just the frame and a star-shaped treetop intact.

Fox News did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
