Man dies after being rescued from Lake Michigan near Grant Park – NBC Chicago

A man died Thursday evening shortly after being rescued from Lake Michigan near Grant Park.

Carnell Williams, 45, was removed from Lake Michigan around 7:15 p.m. near the 700 block of South DuSable Lake Shore Drive, Chicago police said.

He was transported in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he died around 8:40 p.m., according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

An autopsy is in progress. Detectives are investigating the death, pending an autopsy, police said.

The National Weather Service had issued a warning late Thursday for waves up to 6 feet and dangerous currents, posing dangerous swimming conditions in Illinois and Indiana. The warning remains in effect until Friday afternoon.
