Manchester City’s Phil Foden scored twice and created another goal in an outstanding first half as they hammered Ipswich Town 6-0 at Portman Road on Sunday to return to the Premier League top four.
The comprehensive victory lifted City to 38 points and into fourth place on goal difference ahead of Newcastle United, but they are still 12 points behind leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand, and six behind Arsenal and Nottingham Forest.
Ipswich, who remain 18th with 16 points, had a few good chances early on, but City threw off the shackles of their recent poor performances with a superb display of attacking football, and once they scored the opening goal, there was no way back for their hosts. .
It happened in the 27th minute when Jérémy Doku combined with Kevin De Bruyne, and he in turn worked the ball for Foden to take a touch before drilling through to break the deadlock.
This trio tormented the Ipswich defense as Mateo Kovacic doubled the lead three minutes later. Doku was involved again on the left, feeding the ball to Foden to serve Kovacic, and the Croatian needed no second invitation to fire into the net from the edge of the area.
City continued to attack down the left and their persistence paid off in the 42nd minute when Foden added his second, his shot twisting under the body of Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton and across the line.
There was no respite after the break as Doku scored four minutes into the second half before allowing Erling Haaland, who signed a lucrative 10-year contract in midweek, to bring the score to 5-0.
Substitute James McAtee completed the rout in the 69th minute with a looping header, much to the delight of manager Pep Guardiola, whose side appeared to be returning to something resembling their best form.
