FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — A Fayetteville man has been charged in connection with a fatal collision that left a married couple dead.
The crash happened around 10:55 a.m. on Christmas Day in the area of Hope Mills Road and Glensford Drive, Fayetteville police said.
Police said a gold Chrysler 300 was traveling north on Hope Mills Road and ran a red light, colliding with a gold Toyota Corolla.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the gold Toyota Corolla was driven by Jada Fields, 47, of Fayetteville, and the front passenger seat was occupied by his wife, Patricia Fields, 46, police said.
Police say the Chrysler 300 was driven by Michael Anthony Smith Jr., 26, also of Fayetteville. There were two other people in his vehicle.
Smith Jr. suffered minor injuries and remained at the scene, police said. The unknown man sitting in the front passenger seat of Smith Jr.’s vehicle fled the scene of the accident. The rear passenger suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment, police said.
According to police, Smith Jr. was charged at the scene with the following offenses:
- Minor death by motor vehicle (2 counts)
- Dangerous driving
- Red light violation
- Do not reduce speed,
- Driving with a revoked license
- Failure to register a vehicle
- No insurance on the vehicle
- Unable to display correct license plate
- Fictitious license plate,
- MOT expired
- Not wearing a seat belt
- Windshield tint violation
