Man arrested, charged with setting fire to Lemon Grove rehab facility

A 37-year-old man accused of starting a small fire last month at a Lemon Grove drug treatment center was arrested last weekend on suspicion of arson, a sheriff’s official said Monday.

The man was arrested Sunday in El Cajon in connection with the Nov. 19 fire at the Kiva Learning Center for Women and Children at the McAlister Institute, Sheriff Sgt. Anthony Portillo said in a press release.

The county sheriff’s department said last week that a man could be seen on surveillance video stacking equipment and setting it on fire near the center lobby on Skyline Drive near Alton Drive.

A staff member saw the fire and called someone who put out the flames, authorities said. The hall door was damaged. No injuries were reported.

Sheriff officials said they sent information from the public to help identify and locate a suspect.

He was incarcerated at San Diego Central Jail and is being held in lieu of $150,000 bond, according to jail records online.

The incident is still under investigation.
