Mammoth, the world’s largest factory to extract carbon from the sky, has just opened its doors

After decades of hype and doubt, giant factories capable of extracting thousands of tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere are starting to churn.

Climeworks, a Swiss start-up, inaugurated the world’s largest carbon absorption plant in Hellisheidi, Iceland on May 8. Nicknamed “Mammoth,” the plant is designed to eliminate 36,000 tons of carbon each year, the equivalent of removing 8,600 cars from the road.
