West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will travel to New Delhi on Saturday for the G20 President’s Dinner, officials said on Wednesday. She will fly to the national capital at the invitation of President Drupadi Murmu, they said.

Claiming it is well known that India is Bharat, Trinamool’s Congress leader on Tuesday questioned the need to “suddenly only use Bharat” when referring to India in an official statement.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan recently shared on X an invitation to President Murmu’s G20 dinner, which described her position as “President of Bharat”.

Welcoming Banerjee’s decision, the opposition BJP said it was a confirmation that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leading the country on the right path.

CPI(M) said she might have “additional work” in New Delhi, as she has in the past.

“It is good that she accepted the invitation as the prestige of the state is at stake and she is going there to represent West Bengal,” senior BJP leader Rahul Sinha told PTI. He claimed that Banerjee was changing his public posture depending on the turn of events.

“Just a day ago she scolded the Modi government on the issue of ‘Bharat’ in the invitation card and the best sense prevailed the next day… It is a confirmation that the way Modi-ji is leading the country is the right way,” said Sinha.

CPI(M) Central Committee member Sujan Chakraborty said the invitation came from the President of Bharat and not the President of India. He said, “So in a way it’s illegal. I wonder if Mamata Banerjee will go there as the CM of West Bengal or as the CM of Paschim Banga (as the state is called in Bengali).

“I believe she has extra work in New Delhi. Every time she goes to New Delhi, she has another goal,” Chakraborty added.

The G20 summit is being held in Delhi on September 9-10 under India’s presidency and several heads of state from around the world including US President Joe Biden are present at the event.

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, with whom Banerjee has cordial relations, will likely also attend the event.
