Malibu shook that the Los Angeles region saw an increase in moderate earthquakes

The earthquake of the amplitude of Sunday 4.1 near Malibu is part of a larger seismic model observed in southern California.

The region has experienced a number of moderate earthquakes since 2024. In 2024, southern California experienced 15 seismic sequences with at least one earthquake of magnitude-4 or more, according to a count of seismologist Lucy Jones, associate of Caltech research. It is the highest annual total in the past 65 years, exceeding 13 views in 1988.

Sunday’s earthquake was the first earthquake of magnitude 4 for southern California until now in 2025, Jones announced on Sunday.

The Malibu region has seen three earthquakes higher than magnitude 4 in the last 13 months.

Are these temblors a sign of the larger toothed earthquakes?

Experts have warned for months that the last earthquakes give no additional clarity at the time of the next devastating earthquake in southern California.

“Seismologists have spent decades trying to read tea leaves to search for models,” said Susan Hough, seismologist of US Geological Survey, a few months ago.

“The seismic network was installed in southern California 100 years ago,” she said, “because scientists thought that small earthquakes would show models before large earthquakes occur. And it just didn’t work.

One thing was clear, she said: “No one found statistically significant models before large earthquakes occur.”

The recent wave of earthquakes, however, should strengthen the threat posed by the notoriously active state -acting landscape, according to experts, and recall the number of Californians live in a danger area.

The earthquake tremors of Eastside Los Angeles in summer, for example, were focused on the defects associated with the Thrust Hills Hills Hills Faille system, which is under the city center of Los Angeles and the bands of the south-east of the County of the, the San Gabriel Valley and the North of Orange.

The areas near Malibu have had stronger earthquakes in the past. On January 18, 1989, an earthquake of magnitude 5 occurred eight miles southeast of Malibu Point, under the bay of Santa Monica. Several people were injured, the items fell from the shelves in the stores and some windows were broken, according to the earthquake data center in southern California.

On New Year’s Day in 1979, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck about eight miles south of Malibu Point, notable because he struck in the Rose Bowl match between USC and Michigan.

“Some stadium fans have been alarmed by the tremors, but the game continued,” said the data center.

Where did we see a recent seismic activity?

Malibu – The Malibu region was a hot spot. There is an earthquake of magnitude 4.6 exactly 13 months ago – February 9, 2024 – strong enough to throw objects from a counter. There was also a magnitude 4.7 on September 12 – surprising enough for the mayor of the city and his wife to plunge under their kitchen table.

Ontario – An earthquake of magnitude 4 struck before dawn on October 6 near Ontario International Airport. Just in Ontario, one of the most populous cities in the County of San Bernardino, there had been five earthquakes of magnitude 3 or more during the month preceding the earthquake of October 6.

ESTSIDE – Eastside was shaken by an earthquake of magnitude 4.4 centered in El Sereno on August 12 and a magnitude of 3.4 on June 2.

County of Kern – An earthquake of magnitude 5.2, the strongest to hit the region in three years, rocked southern California on August 6, with an epicenter in the northwest of the vine. Another largely felt earthquake, a magnitude of 4.9, struck on July 29 at around 13 miles northeast of Barstow.

And the damage?

The Sunday earthquake was felt in the region, but there was no damage report.

This corresponds to the experience last year. Earthquakes in 2024 rocked the region, but the damage was decidedly modest, such as objects eliminated from the shelves because they were relatively small temblors.
