Majorie Taylor Greene Insults Jasmine Crockett, Throws Oversight Committee Hearing into Chaos

WASHINGTON — The House Oversight Committee descended into chaos Thursday night after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) made an offhand remark about the representative. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas).

Crockett and Greene got into it almost immediately, with Crockett suggesting that Greene had misunderstood the purpose of the hearing.

“I think your false eyelashes are ruining what you’re reading,” Greene said.

An outcry ensued, with Comer calling for order and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) demanding that the committee “retract” Greene’s words, essentially chastising her for insulting a fellow lawmaker.

“This is absolutely unacceptable, how dare you attack another person’s physical appearance,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

“Are your feelings hurt?” » said Greene.

Comer quickly suspended the hearing for several minutes so lawmakers could speak with their parliamentary experts, and Greene agreed to “delete” her remarks, but she refused to apologize, and then she and Ocasio-Cortez resumed their exchanges.

“Come on guys,” Comer pleaded.

“Why don’t you debate with me?” Greene said.

“I think it goes without saying,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

“Yes, you don’t have enough intelligence,” Greene replied.

Ultimately, after several more minutes of parliamentary debate, the committee voted to allow Greene to complete her allotted speaking time. But Crockett wasn’t done.

“I’m just curious, just to better understand your decision,” Crockett said. “If someone on this committee starts talking about someone’s bleached blonde, bad build and butch body, that wouldn’t engage in personalities, would it?”

“And now?” Comer said.

Screams followed and Comer eventually called a five-minute break. After they returned, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Col.), herself one of the House’s most inflammatory Republicans — but also an enemy of Greene — tried to calm things down.

“I just want to apologize to the American people,” Boebert said. “When things get this heated, unfortunately, it’s a discomfort to our body as a whole.”

The hearing was supposed to showcase ongoing Republican efforts to charge U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland with contempt of Congress, but it got off to a late start because several Republicans spent the morning at Donald Trump’s trial in New York, and as Comer called the meeting to order; lawmakers might have been grumpier than usual.

“I think these 17-hour days might not work for us,” Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Mary.) said at one point.
