Major late-season atmospheric river will water western Washington

SEATTLEWestern Washington is bracing for a significant atmospheric river event that is expected to bring heavy rain and potentially strong winds Sunday evening through Tuesday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Seattle has forecast widespread rain, with most areas having at least a 50% chance of receiving more than an inch of rain Sunday evening through Monday afternoon.

The lowlands of Puget Sound can expect 1 to 2 inches of rain, while mountainous areas could see between 2 and 5 inches. Coastal areas may receive 2 to 3 inches, according to FOX 13 Seattle meteorologists. This deluge is notable because the average rainfall for the entire month of June in Seattle is 1.63 inches, and the city could experience more than half of that total in just 48 hours.

In addition to heavy rain, FOX 13 Seattle meteorologists say Monday will bring windy conditions and a chance of thunderstorms ahead of an approaching cold front. High temperatures Sunday through Tuesday are expected to struggle to reach 60 degrees.

The Puget Sound Convergence Zone could bring lingering showers through Wednesday, but most areas are expected to experience drier conditions by midweek.

These late spring rains are a welcome sight for firefighters, as they can help delay the start of the fire season in the mountains and areas west of the Cascades.

Looking ahead, a ridge of high pressure is expected to form over the west coast starting Wednesday, leading to drier conditions and significantly warmer temperatures. By Friday, temperatures in Western Washington are expected to reach the 70s.

Residents are advised to prepare for possible flooding in low-lying areas and stay informed of changing weather conditions on the FOX 13 Seattle news and weather apps and online.
