Maheshwari Chauhan sealed India’s 21st quota spot in shooting for the Paris Olympics by winning a silver medal in the women’s skeet event at the ISSF Olympic Shotgun Qualification Final Championship in Doha.

Maheshwari, playing in her first ISSF final, lost 3-4 to Chilean Francisca Crovetto Chadid in a play-off for first place, after the two were tied on 54 accurate hits in the final of 60 shots.

This is India’s second quota place at the Paris Olympics in women’s skeet.

“I’m delighted. There’s been a lot of hard work over the years to get to this point. I’m a little disappointed with the play-off, but overall it’s been very satisfying,” Maheshwari said after the final.

The day started with the Indian at the top of the qualifying list, but a final score of 23 meant she had to qualify for the top-six final in fourth position. His total of 121, however, allowed him to set a new national record.

Given that Chadid had already earned a quota spot in previous competitions and China’s Jiang Yiting, the sixth qualifier, was ineligible because her country had already exhausted its quotas in the event, Maheshwari’s fight was with three others: Assem Orybay from Kazakhstan, Rigina Meftakhetdinova from Azerbaijan and Victoria from Sweden. Larsson.

After the first 20 shots, which constitute the first elimination stage, the Indian was second, behind Chadid, having missed two targets.

The quota was confirmed after Rigina withdrew, having missed five out of 30. Victoria of Sweden would claim the other available quota.

With a quota place reserved in Paris, Maheshwari improved as the final progressed, catching the leader after 50 shots. Both had missed five at this point.

Maheshwari then had three chances to win gold, but it didn’t happen and she completely missed her double in the third round of the play-off to hand the gold to Chadid.
