Maggie Haberman recalls Donald Trump ‘literally pushing’ Alina Habba in frustration

The New York Times’ Maggie Haberman and Elie Honig, CNN’s senior legal analyst, discussed how tensions could arise between Donald Trump and his defense team in the former president’s upcoming criminal trial, which is scheduled to begin Monday.

Haberman, on Kaitlan Collin’s “The Source,” recalled that Trump “literally pushed” his lawyer Alina Habba to act in past civil court appearances.

Being Trump’s lawyer is “a tough job,” Honig noted during a discussion about the reported departure of Trump lawyer Eva Corcoran from the presumptive GOP nominee’s legal team. Corcoran will now be a witness in this case.

Honig named just a few of Trump’s former lawyers who were jailed, indicted and disbarred. “It’s really hard to think of an example of someone who represented Trump and came out with their financial situation intact, their professional reputation intact, their exposure to crime intact. It’s backbreaking work,” he added.

Haberman acknowledged that Trump is “going through the lawyers,” that “we’ve seen this over and over again” and that it “goes back, frankly, many, many years.”

Honig suggested observing the dynamic playing out between Trump and his lawyers “because there’s always a little bit of tension at trial.”

“Sometimes the defense attorney wants to go one way, the client wants him to be more aggressive here or less aggressive there,” he noted. “And it can spill over. And sometimes that’s reflected in the courtroom itself.

“We’ve seen it before,” Haberman suggested. “At least in civil cases. There was a lot of Donald Trump literally pushing his lawyer Alina Habba to stand up.”
