Boston – Madison Chock and Evan Bates have now won the world title of Ice Dance each season of this Olympic cycle.
All that remains for married Americans is to reach their first Olympic ice dance podium in 2026 (to accompany their gold team event in 2022). Preferably on the higher step, where they have become very comfortable in the past three years.
Chock and Bates filled their world championships at three peat on Saturday at TD Garden. These are the first ice dancers to win three consecutive world titles since the Russians Oksana Grishuk and Evgeni Platov won four in 1994 to 1997.
They won both the rhythmic dance on Friday and the free dance on Saturday, totaling 222.06 points and moving away from the silver medalists Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier from Canada by 5.52.

“We want a moment like that for a long time,” said Bates on NBC Sports to win on the ice at home on Saturday. “The last two titles in the world that we did not feel as well as that. It will forever go to the top of the list.”
Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson took bronze, the first world medal for British artistic skaters since Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won their last of the four consecutive titles in 1984.
Chock, 32, and Bates, 36, have been partners on ice since 2011 and were married last June.
At the Olympic Games, they finished eighth (2014), ninth (2018) and fourth (2022).
None of the 2022 Olympic Ice Dance medalists no longer participate internationally. Chock and Bates obviously filled the void, at some point, winning eight consecutive competitions from January 2023 to March 2024.
They were defeated twice this season – by Fear and Gibson at Skate America from October and Gilles and Poirier during their last pre -world event, FE Four contained championships of February in Seoul.
“We are a little disappointed not to have won here; that was the goal we are set for,” said Poirier, who with Gilles won a fourth world medal (all money or bronze). “But I think that at the same time, we can be very proud of the way we managed the season.”
Fear and Gibson, fourth in Worlds in 2023 and 2024, were ecstatic to switch to bronze.
“I cried constantly,” said Fear.
Fear was born in the Connecticut of Canadian Parents and moved to London at the age of 2. Gibson, from the Prestwick Coastal Scottish city, started to skate after watching the British television program “Dancing On Ice” which was organized by Torvill and Dean.
For Chock and Bates, they enter the 2025-26 Olympic season – perhaps their last competition – biding to become the oldest Olympic ice dance champions.
“I would say never say never (about the competition beyond 2026), but at this stage, we put all our tokens on the table for next season,” said Bates before Worlds. “We were so focused on the maximization absolutely of our potential for Boston, for the next 12 months. We will treat it as if it was our last blow.”
The worlds end later Saturday with free men’s skating, live from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. HE on Peacock and 8-10 on NBC and Peacock for the last two groups.
Alysa Liu becomes the first American woman to win a world title since 2006, after returning to international competition last October, her first since her bronze medal tour at the 2022 World Championships.
