Madhya Pradesh’s Shivraj Singh Chouhan says: ‘He was not a CM candidate earlier or now’ – Firstpost

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said he is just a party member and whatever post or function the BJP gives him, he will fulfill it.

“I was also not a candidate for the post of chief minister earlier or now. I am just a party member…,” Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Tuesday.

The statement was made by Chouhan amid speculation over who will be the next chief minister of Madhya Pradesh after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) retained power in the state in the recently concluded assembly elections.

“I am just a party member and whatever post or function the party gives me, I will fulfill it,” Chouhan said.

“I consider myself lucky to have the opportunity to work with a leader like Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” the Madhya Pradesh chief minister said.

He also thanked the people of Madhya Pradesh for voting for the BJP.

“As a part of the family, the BJP will continue to work for the development of the people of Madhya Pradesh,” Chouhan added.

In the 230-member Madhya Pradesh Assembly, the BJP won 163 seats, while the Congress managed to win only 66 seats.

Chouhan is the longest-serving chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, having first been sworn in to the state’s top post in 2005.

Considered one of the most prominent leaders of the BJP, Chouhan, in the 2023 assembly elections, contested from the Budhni constituency, which has been a stronghold for him since 2006.

He won for the first time from Budhni constituency in 1990 and was first elected to Lok Sabha from Vidisha constituency in 1991.

He then won the Budhni constituency seat again in 2006, retaining his hold over the constituency to this day.
