‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ director reveals Tom Hardy ‘had to be persuaded to step out of his trailer’ to film, fueling his feud with Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron spoke openly about the difficulties she had while filming Mad Max: Road to Fury with his main co-star, Tom Hardy. But director George Miller recently revealed what could have caused their feud while filming in the Namibian desert.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Miller initially attributed this to their creative differences, noting: “They were just two very different performers.”

But he revealed: “Tom has damage but also a genius to match, and whatever was going on with him at the time, he had to be coaxed out of his caravan. Whereas Charlize was incredibly disciplined – a trained dancer, which was reflected in the precision of her performance – and always the first on set.

Miller compared their differences to the on-screen tension between their characters, who became reluctant allies in the 2015 post-apocalyptic feature.

“I’m an optimist, so I viewed their behavior as a reflection of their character, where they had to learn to cooperate in order to ensure their mutual survival,” Miller said. “There’s no excuse for that, and I think there’s a tendency in this industry to use great performance as an excuse for further disruption that could be avoided.”

As Variety reports, Theron admitted in the Mad Max: Road to Fury oral history Blood, sweat and chrome that she has since come to regret the way she and Hardy handled their conflict at the time.

She said it was like they were “two parents in the front of the car.” We were either arguing or getting angry – I don’t know which is worse – and they had to deal with it behind their backs. It was horrible! We shouldn’t have done that; we should have been better. I can admit it.

In one case detailed in oral history, Hardy allegedly showed up three hours late while Theron waited in the War Rig in full costume and makeup.

“The call to set was at eight o’clock. Charlize arrived sharp at eight, sat in the War Rig, knowing that Tom would never be there at eight, even if they made a special request for him to be there on time.” said cameraman Mark Goellnicht. “He was notorious for never being on time in the morning. If the call time was in the morning, forget it, he didn’t show up.

Miller later said in his interview that he had warned Furiosa: A Mad Max saga features Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth on the psychological toll filming could have on them. “You have to be obsessed with safety: physical safety, as you film and get tired, but also psychological safety. It’s not like the old days,” he remembers telling them.

Taylor-Joy recently alluded to the difficult times she experienced while filming the previous film, in which she played Theron’s role as Furiosa.

“I have never been more alone than while making this film,” she said recently. The New York Times. “I don’t want to go too far, but everything I thought was easy was hard.”

When the New York Times Asked for more details about what made production so difficult, Taylor-Joy shut down the questions and told the outlet, “Talk to me in 20 years.”

Furiosa premieres in theaters May 24.
