Macron will visit Greenland this month, defying Trump

In a challenge of Trump’s president’s wish to take control of GreenlandPresident Emmanuel Macron of France will visit the huge Arctic island on June 15 in order to “contribute to the strengthening of European sovereignty”.

The French presidency announced on Saturday the visit, saying that Mr. Macron had accepted an invitation from Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Prime Minister of Greenland, and of Put Frederiksen, the Danish Prime Minister, with whom he said that Mr. Macron would discuss “security in the North Atlantic and the Arctic”.

Greenland, a Semi-auto island which is a territory in DenmarkA NATO ally has been pushed in recent months with a distant existence and without incident to the Center of a geostrategic storm by the repeated requirements of Mr. Trump to be part of the United States, in one way or another.

“I think there is a good possibility that we can do it without military force,” said Trump in March, but added that he would not “withdraw anything from the table”.

Mr. Macron, who saw in the various provocations led by Europe by the Trump administration, an opportunity for the European affirmation of his power, will be the first foreign head of state to go to Greenland since Mr. Trump launched his annexation campaign this year.
