Macron ally backs Spanish socialist Ribera as EU climate boss – POLITICO

Ribera is actively seeking a top position in the next Commission, the EU executive, which will lead a super department for climate, energy and environment. She sharply criticized Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who she said had made concessions to the right on green policy.

Currently Spanish Minister for Ecological Transition, Ribera criticized France for blocking the construction of energy links with the Iberian Peninsula. She also fought French efforts to promote the green status of nuclear power.

The European Greens, on the other hand, do not yet support Ribera.

Green lead candidate Terry Reintke said “potential questions about commissioners…will be answered after the election when we see what the majority situation is in this House.”
