macOS 26.1 beta 3 changes the polarizing Macintosh HD icon

It turns out that Apple TV isn’t the only new icon in current versions of OS 26.1 beta 3. Remember the controversial hard drive icon in macOS Tahoe over the summer? Apple shipped the design, but it looks like a new version is coming after all.

macOS Tahoe 26 includes the Liquid Glass redesign and updated icon set that iOS 26 and other Apple platforms offer this year.

Apple took the opportunity to update the classic hard drive icon for Macintosh HD to one that more accurately resembles the solid state drives used in modern Macs.

However, Mac users took issue with a few details.

First, the Apple logo perspective and driving angle didn’t make much sense. Second, the drive icon also had a random port and holes.

The drive icon also looks more like an external SSD than the flash storage chip used in computers, but that’s acceptable for an icon.

Apple seems to have taken this feedback to heart with the new Macintosh HD icon in macOS 26.1 Tahoe. This is the version included in today’s Beta 3:
