Luka Doncic faces one-game ban after technical foul against Blazers

The Mavericks may have to end the regular season without their best player.

Luka Doncic picked up his 16th technical foul of the season on Friday night, triggering an automatic one-game suspension that will see him miss Sunday’s final against Spurs unless the league office clears the foul. The Mavericks (51-30) are still playing for the top seed, with a half game between them in fourth place and the Warriors (51-29), who sit in third place in the West.

Doncic was unhappy with a no-call on his half-court shot at the first quarter buzzer when he thought Portland’s Elijah Hughes undermined him from behind. After protesting to referee Tom Washington, Doncic went to speak to team manager Tony Brothers, who released the technique.

Luka Doncic was upset that a foul was not called on his half-court kick against the Blazers on Friday.

“If you ask me, I think it should be canceled 100% because it wasn’t technology at all,” Doncic told reporters after the 128-78 win. “No warning, nothing. I just asked him, ‘How is that not a call?’ Hope it will be [rescinded]so I can play on Sunday.

The win gave Dallas the home court advantage in the first round, although the Mavericks would of course like to see their seeding as high as possible.

“At the end of the quarter [Doncic] fired and he felt he was fouled,” Brothers said in a pool report. “He started complaining to each of the officials. When I walked to a table, he was 15 feet in the backcourt and always complaining, so he had a technique for complaining continuously.

The brothers said Doncic did not use profanity. It’s not the first time, however, that the 23-year-old has struggled with technical fouls.

Doncic was called up for 17 of them last season, only avoiding suspension because two were waived. He also had one canceled earlier this season.

“I don’t know why I had a technician honestly,” said Doncic. “I asked him, ‘How is that not a foul?’ and he just found me a technician. So I don’t really know how I was able to find a technician there.
