Luigi Mangione, the 26 -year -old accused, accused of killing the CEO of Unitedhealthcare, Brian Thompson, pleaded not Friday on all federal accusations against him in the case.
Mangione, wearing a combination of beige prison and chained with wrists and ankles, placed the pleas of the Federal Court of Manhattan for a murder – for which the Ministry of Justice declared that he would ask for the death penalty – and two chiefs of harassment and an offense with firearms.
The appearance before the court comes about a week after a large federal jury charged Mangione on the four federal accusations during the December 4 murder of the Director of Insurance.
The targeted filming of Thompson, which was on the way to a conference of investors in Unitedhealthcare in New York, led to a effusion of support for Mangione of people suffering from deep frustration and anger against the American system of for profit.
The last appearance of the Mangione court in February – for the accusations of New York State in the case – attracted a considerable contingent of supporters, many of whom carried green in solidarity – a reference to the “Luigi” character of Nintendo – and stood outside by holding signs reading “Luigi” and “health care” of Nintendo – are a human right.
Mangione’s best federal accusation, murder by using a firearm, could win a death sentence or life prison, according to the American prosecutor’s office for the South New York district. The Ministry of Justice filed an opinion on Thursday saying that he intended to ask for the death penalty, weeks after the prosecutor General Pam Bondi ordered the office to ask the sentence.
He also faces state accusations in New York and Pennsylvania linked to manhunt and follow a week.
In New York, he pleaded not guilty of state murder and terrorists. In his case of Pennsylvania, he faces accusations of firearms and counterfeiting as part of the firearm printed in 3D and False identification would be in his possession when he was arrested in a McDonald’s in Altoona. He did not plead in Pennsylvania before being extradited to New York to face it.
A mangione lawyer filed a series of requests before the Pennsylvania State Court aimed at rejecting the accusations brought against him and to delete several evidence if the case is tried. His lawyers said Mangione had been illegally arrested and excavated by the authorities and asked that the writings recovered from Mangione are not called manifesto.
The accusations arise from the Thompson’s December 4 shootout to Midtown Manhattan, who sparked a five -day man hunt.
Mangione was arrested as part of the murder in Pennsylvania, more than 270 miles from the shooting. He would have possessed on him the false identity document used by the suspect, the weapon they believe was used in the shooting and a manuscript “complaint of responsibility”, said the authorities.
Mangione was not provided by Unitedhealthcare, but at the time of his arrest, he would have had a manuscript notebook which expressed “hostility towards the health insurance sector and rich executives in particular”, according to a federal complaint. In particular, three 9 mm shell envelopes from the crime scene had the words “delay”, “deny” and “deposit” which are written to them, said the NYPD, an apparent wink to a 2010 book criticizing the tactics of the insurance industry.
Mangione has collected the support of some who consider the American health insurance industry as broken, too expensive and quick to deny the coverage. The majority of assured American adults had at least one problem with their health insurance in the space of a year, including the refusal of complaints, according to a survey published in June 2023 by the KFF non -profit health policies.
As of April 24, a legal defense fund in support of Mangione collected more than $ 900,000.
“To be honest, I am really not surprised that all this general support has somehow increased at the moment for this young man who would have taken measures in this way,” said Sam Beard, spokesperson for the Legal Committee on December 4 – the fundraising group for Mangione – previously told Laura Coates of CNN.
“I think the Americans are tired of the path of – that the health insurance system operates,” added Beard.
Meanwhile, traditional politicians have castigated Mangione’s alleged actions as horrible crimes and said it should face serious consequences.
“In America, we do not kill people of cold blood to resolve the differences in politics or express a point of view,” said Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, the same day, Mangione was apprehended. “He’s not a hero.”
The highly polarizing points of view on his case made mangione a particular objective of public attention.
In December, Mangione was taken from Pennsylvania to downtown New York on a jet and a helicopter in a remarkable show in front of media cameras. Once in New York, a handcuffed mangion was led on a long “Perp walk” by a swarm of officers heavily armed with the NYPD, with the mayor of New York Eric Adams and the commissioner of the NYPD Jessica Tisch just behind them.
Defense accused the police and prosecutors of playing inappropriately with television cameras in this incident.
The judicial hearing on February 21 of Mangione in New York on state accusations attracted dozens of his supporters despite icy temperatures and long lines to enter the courtroom.
Some wore “Luigi” scarves and “Luigi Free” sweaters, and they chanted slogans supporting it and criticizing the American health care industry. Chelsea Manning, the former military soldier of the United States and a denunciator found guilty of breaking the spying law after having disclosed documents to Wikileaks, was spotted among the participants.
Mangione himself wore a green sweater during this court hearing – a fashion choice that the prosecutors declared that the defense had made intentionally. The defense “has a part crying when entities outside the control of the people have made public statements or gestures, while the other has itself fueled the flames of public attention,” the prosecutors wrote in a recent deposit.
In addition, the prosecutors revealed that the mangione lawyers had provided him with a new pair of argyle socks which contained notes of hidden support in the shape of a heart. Mangione lawyers later said that they “inadvertently did not see” the notes in the socks.
In the end, Mangione did not carry these socks during the hearing.
