Los Angeles (AP) – Los Angeles police said they stopped a man who used a chainsaw to reduce large trees in at least three districts of the city.
Indignant residents began to report destruction on Friday afternoon. Photos published online have shown several mature trees reversed on the sidewalks of the city center, and at least one fell on a street.
The LAPD said that “many” trees had been slaughtered on a property belonging to the city on at least four house pâtés and that detectives were investigating other possible places. On Tuesday, they published a photo of a suspect on a bike wearing dark clothes and wearing two bags. A community alert described him as a man in his forties.
A few hours later, the police announced an arrest, saying that a 45 -year -old man had been placed in police custody suspected of crime of vandalism and that “the detectives have located evidence to the crimes.” There was no information on a possible reason.
A message was sent to the Los Angeles public defender’s office asking if one of his lawyers represented the man and could speak on his behalf.
Some trees had large trunks. A number seemed to be Ficus trees.
In a press release, the mayor’s office Karen Bass called the carnage “really beyond understanding”.
“The city’s public works teams assess the damage and we plan to quickly replace these damaged trees,” the statement said.
