Hollywood is ablaze. While this phrase was often used metaphorically, it has now taken on a literal and tragic meaning. Since last Tuesday, wildfires fueled by strong winds have been ravaging Los Angeles and its surrounding areas, causing widespread destruction.
This disaster has significantly impacted the American entertainment capital, leading to the shutdown of production on numerous TV series. Shows like Fallout, Grey’s Anatomy, and Abbot Elementary are among those affected.
Although the studios themselves are not directly threatened by the flames, the air quality has become particularly hazardous, prompting numerous productions to pause. NBCUniversal has announced that it is pausing the production of its series Hacks (season 4), Loot (season 3), Ted (season 2), Suits: L.A., and Happy’s Place.
While Amazon had already declared a halt in filming the second season of Fallout, CBS Studios has also ceased production on NCIS, NCIS: Origins, After Midnight, Poppa’s House, and The Neighborhood.
Warner Bros. has stopped filming for its shows Abbott Elementary (season 5), All-American, and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. Disney followed suit, pausing Doctor Odyssey (season 2), Grey’s Anatomy (season 22), and the show Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Numerous events have also been canceled or postponed, including film premieres scheduled in Los Angeles or the end of the nomination period for the upcoming Oscars.
Furthermore, the FilmLA agency, which issues filming permits in the city, stated that “the Los Angeles County Fire Department has specifically ordered that all issued permits for filming in the communities of Altadena, La Crescenta, La Canada/Flintridge, and the city of Pasadena be withdrawn.”
It is still uncertain whether these production halts will require networks and broadcasters to delay the release of their series. However, this concern seems minor in comparison to the scale of the disaster.
As of Wednesday, the damage includes 12,000 hectares of land affected, over 1,500 homes and buildings destroyed, 5 deaths, and 100,000 residents displaced in areas such as Pacific Palisades, Altadena, Sylmar, Pasadena, and Santa Clarita.
