Lori Vallow Daybell, the “mother of Doomsday” who is tried for the death of her fourth husband, had a tense exchange with the woman who reported with him the day before her assassination.
Vallow Daybell, who stands out in the trial, counter-examines the woman, Nancy Jo Hancock on Wednesday, making occasional sly remarks while Hancock discussed his brief relationship with Charles Vallow. The accusation has opposed several times and accused Vallow Daybell of being argumentative and asking unrelevant questions.
At one point, the judge called for a break and asked Vallow Daybell if she wanted to continue questioning Hancock about the nature of her text messages with Charles Vallow.
Hancock, 61, said she met Charles Vallow in early July 2019 on a dating site for members of their church. The pair sent a text and spoken on the phone for several days before meeting in person for dinner on July 10, 2019, the day before his death.
Hancock told the prosecutor Treena Kay that they had exchanged “hundreds” of SMS and that he spoke on the phone for hours. Charles Vallow told Hancock that he was divorced, she testified and spoke “a lot” of Vallow Daybell and the problems they would have had.
She said Charles Vallow had expressed “concerns for his security” and shared that he had changed the beneficiary of his $ 1 million life insurance policy to her sister.
Hancock said she had the impression that Charles Vallow’s marriage had had problems for “several months”, but that intensified in early 2019.
Hancock said Charles Vallow had “a lot of madness around him”, but she continued to speak to him because he was “very charming, kind, funny and very intelligent”.
“He seemed pretty great,” she told Kay.
Hancock continued saying that at dinner, Charles Vallow was delighted to see his son, Joshua “JJ” Vallow, the next morning to take him to school. Hancock testified that she and Charles Vallow were supposed to find herself the day he had been killed, but she never heard of him.
It was not until months later, when she looked at the news that she saw a story about her death, she told court.
Vallow Daybell started her range of questions by asking Hancock if she never checked Charles Vallow’s claims that he was divorcing.
“No, I didn’t try to check this,” said Hancock.
“Having you made an appointment with him if he had said he was married?” Asked Vallow Daybell, telling Hancock that they were not divorced.
“Hmm, if I had realized how married he was, maybe not,” said Hancock. “But I just met for dinner. I was not lying with him or anything.”
“Are you going to dates with married men?” Vallow Daybell retaliated.
The accusation opposed and said that Vallow Daybell was argumentative. The judge supported the objection.
“Your honor, I do not have the right to contravene this witness for what it has already testified?” Asked Vallow Daybell.
The judge told her that she had been authorized to oppose Hancock.
“So did you make an appointment with a married man?” Said Vallow Daybell, closing his attention to Hancock.
“I made an appointment with Charles,” said Hancock. “I knew that his divorce was not final.”
“His divorce was not launched,” said Vallow Daybell.
“Okay,” replied Hancock.
The accusation once again opposed after Vallow Daybell asked if Charles Vallow responded to a Hancock SMS asking if he was a good kiss. Prosecutor Kay said Vallow Daybell’s question was not relevant. The judge suffered.
At one point, Vallow Daybell asked Hancock if Charles and Charles Vallow spent their dinner talking about her.
“So did you spend all your appointment to know each other, to talk about me?” Asked Vallow Daybell.
“Will not be flattering. No, we didn’t spend all the time talking about you,” retaliated Hancock.
Vallow Daybell also asked Hancock if Charles Vallow had already talked about his disputed relationship with Vallow Daybell’s daughter, Tylee Ryan. Vallow Daybell underwent several perpetuity sentences in 2023 for the murders of Tylee, Joshua and his romantic rival.
Hancock said that she did not remember that they had had this conversation.
“I’m sure you don’t,” Marmonna Vallow Daybell.
The accusation opposed side remarks making solutions. The judge suffered.
Vallow Daybell then returned his interrogation to the Hancock dinner with Charles Vallow. She asked Hancock if it was common for men to talk about their “supposed ex-wives” on dates.
“It’s actually very common,” said Hancock.
“Really?” Said Vallow Daybell. “Interesting.”
Prosecutor Kay again opposed what Vallow Daybell comments after his interrogation.
“I’m sorry, your honor. I will not do it again,” said Vallow Daybell.
“Please arrest,” said the judge.
