Rival fans took to social media to mock Liverpool following the Reds’ shock defeat to Atalanta.

Liverpool gave arguably one of their worst performances under Jurgen Klopp on Thursday when they lost 3-0 to the Italian side at Anfield in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final.

It was a result few saw coming. Fans had all but booked a thrilling final between Klopp’s side and Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen in Dublin next month, although that now appears to be just a fantasy.

The hosts were lukewarm and timid, Anfield silent as they watched their title contenders buckle under expectation in a competition they almost should have been walking in.

Manchester United fans, in particular, are rejoicing at their rivals’ struggles. Liverpool drew 2-2 against the Red Devils last week as their title quest hit a bump in the road, and rival fans took pleasure in mocking the Reds.

A United fan has claimed Kobbie Mainoo helped spark a disastrous week for the Merseyside side.

“The boy behind the fall of Liverpool, show my starboy some respect,” one fan posted on X, formerly Twitter, alongside two photos of teenage sensation Kobbie Mainoo.

“Manchester United beat Liverpool. You love seeing it,” added another.

A third United fan posted: “Klopp leaves Liverpool without beating Ten Hag once”, accompanied by a series of laughing emojis and Klopp’s face edited onto a baby held by Ten Hag.

More and more supporters pointed out that this meeting was Klopp’s last as coach after eight years in charge of the club, and that it would apparently not go completely as planned.

After winning the Carabao Cup with a sensationally injured squad earlier this year, there were hopes of winning the quadruple for Liverpool with the FA Cup, Europa League and Premier League still to play for.

A frustrating FA Cup exit to United followed, however, with a week to forget, denying Klopp’s side the title favorites in the other two competitions.

“I hope Klopp’s farewell tour isn’t just about the Liverpool Football Club Carabao Cup before saying goodbye,” one fan posted on X, alongside a video of a Klopp lookalike Klopp thrashing on the ground in frustration.

Another wrote: “Hello Liverpool fans. How is Klopp’s Quadruple season going? This is where you will run out of tears. Don’t say we didn’t warn you,” shared Liverpool’s tricky schedule.

A third, targeting captain Virgil van Dijk, wrote: “Virgil van Dijk’s charge for the Ballon d’Or is officially over, it was fun while it lasted.”

Some fans pointed out that the current showdown was the final during Jurgen Klopp’s time with Liverpool.

Klopp has been left frustrated and his team now face a mammoth task to turn things around.

The Reds will have a tough task to turn things around next week in Italy, but they will be buoyed by that after securing memorable returns in Europe during Klopp’s reign.

In the Premier League, they are second in the table, behind Arsenal on goal difference with seven matches remaining.

This weekend they face Crystal Palace at Anfield, hoping to regain top spot, with reigning champions Manchester City now favorites to win the title.
