Liverpool agree deal to sign Federico Chiesa from Juventus

Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Juventus striker Federico Chiesa.

Liverpool will pay their Serie A counterparts £10m, with an additional £2.5m based on team performance.

Chiesa now flies to Merseyside to complete his medical, with personal terms in place on a four-year contract at Anfield.

If all goes to plan, Chiesa will become Liverpool’s first summer signing under new head coach Arne Slot.

Chiesa’s arrival at Liverpool will not result in any of the club’s current strikers leaving Anfield before Friday’s transfer deadline.

Slot’s plan is to operate with six front-row forwards this season, with Chiesa brought in to complement Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez.

The Athletic reported on Tuesday that Liverpool were working to complete the signing of Chiesa before the transfer window closed.

News emerged on Monday that the Anfield club were exploring a deal for the striker after the Italian winger was made available for a cut-price fee, given his terms expire in 2025.

Why Liverpool want Chiesa – and would he be a good choice?

After admiring Chiesa for several years, Liverpool decided to capitalise on the situation.

Chiesa, like several first-team players, has been left out of Thiago Motta’s Juventus squad.

He initially joined Juventus on loan from Fiorentina in 2020, with the transfer becoming permanent for €50 million (now £42.3 million; $55.8 million).

Last season, under former coach Massimiliano Allegri, Chiesa was a key player for Juventus, scoring 10 goals and providing three assists in 37 appearances in all competitions. The 2023-24 campaign marked his first full season since recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered in January 2022, which sidelined him for around nine months.

Chiesa was a standout performer for Italy in their victorious European Championship campaign in 2021 and also featured in the 2024 edition, where Italy were eliminated in the round of 16.

Since arriving in Turin, Chiesa has scored 32 goals in 131 games for Juventus, having netted 34 times in 154 appearances for Fiorentina.
