The court resumes sitting on Monday for the murder trial of Karen Read, which saw only one day of testimony last week.

Several witnesses took the stand last Tuesday, including Brian Higgins, who exchanged flirty texts with Read during her relationship with Boston police officer John O’Keefe. Higgins went out drinking with Read, O’Keefe and others on January 28, 2022, also attending a later party at 34 Fairview Road in Canton — the same house where O’Keefe was found unconscious the next morning.

Read, 44, of Mansfield, is accused of backing her SUV into O’Keefe as she was dropping him off at the afterparty. However, Read’s lawyers claim she was framed, alleging O’Keefe entered 34 Fairview Road and was assaulted by other guests, possibly attacked by the family dog, and thrown out . Higgins is one of three men the defense has sought to implicate in its cover-up theory.

As he concluded his multi-day testimony, Higgins confirmed that he threw his cell phone at a Cape Cod military base in late 2022, although he rebuffed the defense team’s efforts to present this decision in a negative light.

O’Keefe’s teenage niece and nephew followed Higgins to the stand. The children lived with their uncle after both parents died and remembered frequent arguments between O’Keefe and Read. Prosecutors suggested the couple’s increasingly strained relationship may have been a motive in O’Keefe’s murder.

Jurors also heard from doctors at Good Samaritan Medical Center, where O’Keefe and Read were treated on the morning of Jan. 29, 2022. Dr. Justin Rice recalled the failed efforts to resuscitate and rewarm O’Keefe, who arrived at emergency department with a core body temperature of 80.1 degrees.

Rice testified that O’Keefe had a cut on the bony ridge above his right eye, as well as swelling and bruising in the surrounding area. He said O’Keefe also had “superficial abrasions” on his right forearm.

Read was taken to the same hospital for a psychiatric evaluation after allegedly making suicidal statements following the discovery of O’Keefe’s body. Rice and Dr. Garrey Faller, pathologist and medical director of the Good Samaritan Laboratory, testified that Read’s blood alcohol level was recorded at 93 mg/dl mid-morning on January 29, 2022.

Nicholas Roberts, who previously worked in the toxicology unit of the Massachusetts State Police crime lab, said Read’s test results would place his blood alcohol level between 0.135 percent and 0.292 percent at 12 a.m. 45 on the 29th.
