LIVE – Vendée Globe: Le Cam has crossed Cape Horn, Dalin consolidates his leadership

Jean Le Cam crossed Cape Horn this Saturday morning

This Saturday morning at 7:01 a.m., Jean Le Cam crossed Cape Horn after 54 days 17:59:03, i.e. 11 days and 8 hours after Yoann Richomme, who was ahead of Charlie Dalin by… 9 minutes! The skipper of “Everything begins in Finistère – Armor Lux” is the 17th solo sailor (16th in the race after the abandonment of Yannick Bestaven after Cape Honr) and the first of the straight daggerboard boats to return to finish the South Seas. He is some 1,060 miles ahead of Benjamin Ferré, second boat with straight daggerboards. This is the seventh Cape Horn for King John to have crossed! In 1982, he worked as Eric Tabarly’s teammate on “Euromarché”. Twenty-two years later, it was at the helm of “Bonduelle” that he crossed it… in the lead ahead of Vincent Riou. In 2008, he capsized with VM Matériaux, just before this Cape Dur, as sailors call it. It was therefore aboard Vincent Riou’s 60-footer, “PRB”, that he passed Cape Horn since Riou had picked him up a few miles before. In 2013, on “Synerciel”, he admitted that he was happy to see it: “Sometimes it didn’t do anything for me but now, it’s good, it’s okay!”. While in 2017 at the helm of “Finistère Mer Vent” or even in 2021 on “Yes we Cam”, Jean Le Cam could savor. This year, on his new straight daggerboard boat, he is the first to return to the Atlantic. At 64, he proves that experience still pays off.
