Several rounds of precipitation are expected to hit the Chicago area Tuesday and Wednesday, with rain potentially changing to snow as the afternoon commute approaches.

Tuesday morning started with rain in parts of the region, with pockets of drizzle and rain to the west and north, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.

By early afternoon, periods of rain in western Illinois were expected to move east, accompanied by the potential for high winds and a few isolated storms.

Around 4 p.m., some of these showers could quickly change to or mix with light snow. According to NBC 5 Meteorologist Alicia Roman, light accumulations of slushy snow could develop in Chicago’s far north counties.

Between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., northern and western counties may experience rain and sleet, which could hamper travel for afternoon commutes.

During Wednesday morning’s commute, more snow was expected across the region.
