The longtime slashdot reader Schwit1 shares an Earth.com report: McDermitt caldera in Oregon draws attention to what could be one of the largest lithium deposits ever identified in the United States. Many consider it as a potential increase in the production of domestic batteries, while local communities express their concern about the impact on wildlife and cultural sites. The excitation follows estimates which appreciate the deposit at around 1.5 billion of dollars. Some geologists say that these ancient volcanic sediments could contain between 20 and 40 million metric tonnes of lithium. The study is published in the journal Minerals.
