At least 10 people were hospitalized in California and Nevada following an epidemic of Listeria to study the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the FDA said in a statement on Saturday.
Foods ready to eat produced by Fresh & Ready Foods LLC from San Fernando, California, are voluntarily recalled, according to the company.
More than 80 products are included in the recall, ranging from snacks to sandwiches and pasta. The products recalled have dates of the best between April 22 and May 19 and the names of Fresh & Ready Foods brands, City Point Market Fresh Food to go and make you want.
The products recalled were distributed in Arizona, California, Nevada and Washington in various places, including hospitals, hotels, corporate offices, convenience stores, airports and airlines.
“The FDA and the CDC began investigating this cluster in 2024, however, there was not enough evidence in the previous survey to identify an epidemic source,” said the FDA. “The investigation was reopened in April 2025 after the FDA investigators found Listeria in environmental samples collected from Fresh & Ready Foods, LLC during a routine surveillance inspection.”
The agencies used the sequencing of the whole genome to correspond to the listeria tension found in fresh and ready foods with the epidemic causing diseases.
“Fresh & Ready Foods has taken immediate corrective measures, in particular the abolition of equipment to solve this problem to guarantee continuous food security and compliance with FDA directives,” the company said in a statement.
Of the 10 known diseases, eight of hospitalizations took place in California and two in Nevada.
Symptoms of listeriosis, or infection of Listeria, usually start within two weeks of consumption of contaminated food, but can start from consumption day to 10 weeks later, said FDA.
The retailers and consumers who have purchased or received the products recalled are informed by the FDA to clean and disinfect the areas they have received, because Listeria can easily spread to other foods and surfaces.
Risk groups, including pregnant women and newborns, people aged 65 or over and those who have a weakened immune system, are encouraged by the FDA to contact a health professional if symptoms begin, such as fever, nausea, muscle pain, vomiting or diarrhea.
