It’s been a very, long, very long Saturday. Ever since the Detroit Lions’ Week 18 win over the Minnesota Vikings to clinch the top seed in the NFC, we’ve all been waiting for this team to kick off their postseason schedule. We expected them to be there, and we’ve waited all season to get to the part that really matters.
Detroit, still a Super Bowl favorite on Saturday afternoon, is ready to push this franchise where it’s never gone before. A victory against Washington’s commanders won’t really get them there. They’ve been to the NFC Championship before, although they’ve never been there in a back-to-back season, and this game has never been hosted by Detroit. But every Super Bowl run starts somewhere.
The commanders themselves are demolishing part of history. Their victory last week in the Wild Card was the franchise’s first playoff victory in 20 years. It’s a karmic experience, considering all of this is happening just a year after he finally exorcised owner Dan Snyder from the team. It’s amazing how quickly a franchise can turn around once a toxic culture is eliminated.
Of course, the Commanders’ success goes beyond new ownership. New head coach Dan Quinn has his team playing above its talent level, and second overall pick Jayden Daniels is having a phenomenal rookie season for a quarterback.
Can the Lions end the Commanders’ Cinderella season or will Washington’s improbable run continue in Philadelphia or Los Angeles?
