Lionel Messi is no stranger to the rewriting of records, and this weekend could see him again engraving his name in the story of Inter Miami. The Argentine icon is about to become the leader of all the club’s time in the contributions of the objectives, which should exceed its former national teammate, Gonzalo Higuain.

Last weekend, Messi scored in the 2-1 victory of Inter Miami against Philadelphia Union, scoring his 23rd goal for his team in Major League Soccer (MLS). Combined with his 20 assists, Messi has now contributed to 43 goals for the club, a figure that places him level with the former Argentinian player Gonzalo Higuain.

What makes Messi’s count even more remarkable is the effectiveness with which he reached the milestone. While Higuain won 67 games to score 43 goals, Messi equaled this total in just 28 appearances since he joined the club in 2023.

Top five total contributions of the objectives of Inter Miami players

Player Objectives contributions Played Games
Gonzalo Higuain 43 67
Lionel Messi 43 28
Leonardo Campana 36 80
Luis Suarez 34 32
Robert Taylor 28 90

With Inter Miami which will face the Toronto FC this weekend, Messi has the ideal opportunity to claim the record. Given its current form, it is likely to achieve the feat in style early Monday morning.

Messi scored 855 goals in his career for the club and the country. He is also the only player to have won six European gold shoes. In addition to that, he won eight Ballon d’Or, most of them for any player.

Messi made an excellent return of the injury, marking only two minutes after released the bench in the 2-1 victory of Inter Miami against the Philadelphia Union. He came out with an injury and missed the qualifications of the Argentine World Cup during the international break.

Inter Miami faces a series of difficult games. They play the LAFC Thursday on the second floor of the quarter -finals of the Concacaf Champions Cup. The team lost 1-0 during the first stage of the tournament on April 3.
