A 14 -year -old girl was killed by a lioness outside the Kenyan capital Nairobi when she was torn off in a ranch bordering the southern edge of a national park, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said on Sunday.
The animal had entered a residential complex near Nairobi National Park on Saturday evening after jumping over a fortune closure, KWS business communications director told CNN.
The lioness then entered a house and attacked the girl, who was inside with a second teenager. “There is no proof of provocation of the victims,” said Udoto.
The second adolescent immediately raised the alarm, encouraging Rangers and KWS emergency teams to respond to the incident. Upon arrival, the team drew blood spots leading to the Mbagathi river, where the girl’s body was found with injuries in the lower back.
The authorities have established a trap and teams deployed to search for the lioness. They also try to strengthen security measures, including electrical fences and early alert systems powered by AI to inform the communities of nearby animal movements, said Udoto.
On Friday, in a different incident, an elephant attacked a 54 -year -old man while he was grazing the cattle in a forest of the county of Nyeri in Kenya. The man suffered breast injuries, fractured ribs and internal trauma, and was declared dead on his arrival in a hospital, KWS said.
The agency added that the two attacks highlight a need for continuous investment in the mitigation of human life conflicts – through strategic interventions, early alert systems and to strengthen collaboration with affected communities. »»
The KWS teams are still investigating attacks, but the preliminary results suggest that the two are “linked to broader ecological pressures and human encroachment on wildlife habitats,” said Udoto.
KWS suspects that the lioness has been disoriented or diverted from its normal hunting behavior due to a shortage of prey in its natural scope and an increasing human activity around the park, added Udoto.
The elephant, meanwhile, attacked the victim after entering the forest to graze the cattle. “It is human activity that has emphasized the scope of the animal, creating conflict conditions,” said Udoto.
“KWS exercises its sincere condolences to bereaved families and continues to work closely with local police and communities to improve the safety of people living near protected wild areas,” the agency said.
Lion and elephant attacks are considered relatively rare, but they can occur in isolated areas, near national parks and game reserves.
Lion attacks represent less than 2% of all reported incidents involving humans and fauna, said Udoto. Elephant incidents are more common and tend to occur during dry seasons, when animals migrate in search of water and food and meet agricultural land or colonies, Udoto added.
