President Donald Trump’s newly confirmed education secretary is ready to achieve the vision of his boss to eliminate his own department.
After being confirmed on Monday evening, the Secretary of Education Linda McMahon published a note describing her objectives for the Ministry of Education. It has supervised its objectives as the “final mission” of the department to reshape education in the United States, claiming that future changes “will have an impact on” the agency’s operations.
“The abolition of administrative formalities and bureaucratic barriers will allow parents to make the best educational choices for their children,” said McMahon. “An effective transfer of educational surveillance to states will mean more autonomy for local communities. Teachers will also benefit from less microgestion in class – allowing them to return to the basics.”
McMahon highlighted three goals on which to focus the restructuring of the Ministry of Education:
They follow Trump’s executive orders linked to education in January. One focused on expanding the programs of good schools, in part by redirecting public federal funds to private schools, while the other prioritized “patriotic training” in public classrooms to eliminate the study program which does not align itself with the president’s policy.
McMahon’s first objective is to expand parents’ roles in the education of their children by providing them with good funded by the State to be used in private establishments. He has long been a priority for Trump and republican legislators. Trump’s plan to go further by considering realloring federal block subsidies intended to stimulate under-funding schools For good private schools would be an escalation, experts in education policy have already told Bi. The administration should probably go through the congress to implement these changes.
The accent put by McMahon on mathematics, reading, science and history is also aligned with the executive orders of Trump. One of them proposed to divert the financing of public schools which teach “gender ideology and the ideology of discriminatory actions”. The Trump administration has recently reduced $ 900 million in research contracts in the Department of Education, and some employees and experts from the Department have declared that cuts could hinder data collection on mathematics and children’s reading.
McMahon did not develop more in his memo concerning his third goal for higher education. She declared during her confirmation audience that she would preserve the programs devoted in law, such as the Pardon Public Loan Program. She also wrote an opinion article in September in the hill expressing her support for the expansion of the eligibility for PELL subsidies to the workforce training programs, not only for college study programs.
Trump and Republican legislators criticized the broad pardon of students and the key reimbursement plan of former president Joe Biden, who enabled cheaper payments. The pursuit of these efforts will probably not be prioritized under McMahon.
We still don’t know how Trump’s executive orders will be carried out. Orders have asked McMahon and other agency leaders to prepare advice on the implementation of changes in the school system, and the advice can end up being less impactful than the declared objectives of Trump and McMahon.
Jon Valant, director of the Brown Center on Education Policy of the Brookings Institution, previously told Bi that even if the schools were waiting for the official advice of the department, it is possible that certain districts can take into account the directives of McMahon and Trump.
“People can interpret them as having more bite than they really do,” he said.
McMahon’s new guidelines occur when Trump has reiterated in recent weeks that he wants to completely eliminate the Ministry of Education. While McMahon said during her confirmation hearing that the agency’s abolition would require an act of congress, she told Democratic legislators in a recent letter that she supported “with all my heart” the mission of Trump according to which “the bureaucracy in Washington should be abolished so that we can return education to the United States”.
