Lifeguards pull man out of rain-swollen San Diego River

Lifeguards and a helicopter crew helped rescue a man from the rain-swollen San Diego River Monday night in Mission Valley, authorities said.

Firefighters received calls shortly before 8 p.m. about a person trapped in the river near Camino De La Reina and Avenida Del Rio, San Diego Fire Battalion Chief Matt Nilsen said.

He said rescuers worked to set up a rope rescue system, with an engine team downriver, while a helicopter hovered over the flowing river.

Rescuers entered the water and reached the man around 8:30 p.m., Nilsen said. They pulled the man to the edge of the river.

He was treated at the scene and released, Nilsen said.
